It's official our home has become a Disney Junior household and we couldn't be happier! As all of my readers know, we were ecstatic when our cable provider brought us Playhouse Disney and in an effort to improve their programming and offer all of our children more of what they love, they have just changed from Playhouse Disney to Disney Junior as of May 6th, 2011. What does this mean exactly? Well, you're going to notice a new logo, some new shorts, slight modifications (improvements!) to existing shows and advertisements and, best of all, the addition of some incredible programming!

A'hoy Mateys! That's what we have to say about that! Well, actually in pirate speak my 2 year old has begun saying "Arrr" because that's what a pirate says, or so I've been informed! All of this pirate talk has been born from the long awaited new Disney Junior program called Jake and the Neverland Pirates. Very simply put: Greatest. Show. Ever! Traditionally, pirates and their fables have been reserved for children that are older than the preschool stage but with Disney Junior program called Jake and the Neverland Pirates,, the excitement, fun and whimsy of Captain Hook and the gang is brought to life for preschoolers. My daughter couldn't love it more and I will admit that I do think it's the cutest thing that she very quickly picked up on the them song and sings along with it absolutely perfectly. It's cute and, as a Mom, I love that she is interacting with wholesome, child-friendly programming from a network that we can all trust. I love that her imagination is challenged and that she truly is engaged in something that the entire family enjoys watching!

Another addition is Mickey's Mousekersize which I spoke about in a previous post on behalf of Playhouse Disney/Disney Junior and since that post our family has had so much fun and laughed so hard while getting up off the couch and getting active with Mickey and his gang for a little while. And a little hint to all the moms out there - when you have other kids over for a playdate and the moms would just like to relax for a little while and chat over a cup of coffee, turn on Mickey's Mousekersize and let the kids really shake their sillys out! This is awesome when the munchkins are starting to get a little unruly and really need to focus and release some energy and they'll absolutely love you for letting them workout with Mickey! Don't you love being the best mom in the world? So just set your vcr's or, if you're lucky like us, your pvr and keep some episodes on hand - you'll thank me when you get to drink your coffee while it's still hot!

And let's not forget the original Canadian series, Stella and Sam. This cartoon actually is reminiscent of the styling of cartoons from my youth and, even in the absence of all of the high energy, vivid colours, Stella and Sam. engages, teaches and encourages children of all ages. I adore it and, of course, do love that it's as Canadian as you and I! I've found that it's a great show to turn on when you're trying to get your kids to calm down at the end of the day and I've often found myself using it as the bedtime show while my daughter has her milk and cookies. She loves to sit on the couch with Mommy and snuggle while we enjoy relaxing to the great adventures of Stella and Sam.!

Mickey's Mousekersize on Playhouse Disney!

Baby it's cold outside! As my little girl says "Brrrrr!" And so you know, it must be true as she's not even 2! Well, we are in Canada and it is March, which means it's still winter and it's just plain yucky. It's gray and dirty and cold and icy and who in the world would want to go out there? This is definitely the time to stay inside but it's pretty challenging to find ways to make activities fun and energetic and healthy for our kids when all we're longing for are those lazy, hazy days of summer.

But we're not quite there yet - so what do we do? I like to think that I'm a creative person so I make sure that we have a healthy mix of learning, craft time, electronics (munchkin loves my iPad!) and physical activity. We have daily "dance offs!" The music comes on, the tutus come out and off we go till our fancy feet can't take anymore! It's fun and certainly moments that I will never forget. And the good old-fashioned Simon Says is a classic that can literally go on forever. I always find that one combines both physical activity with learning so it's a must-do every day.

Oh and if you've never heard of Dance Star Mickey, you should get yourself to the toy store and check him out. I'll admit he's a bit pricey but, in the end, worth every penny! He even does the moonwalk! The neat thing that he does though is plays Mickey Says with your child, he dances with your child and gives instructions that are received very well, even by my 23 month old who is under the suggested age range. Grandpa couldn't resist getting it for her for Christmas and, until now, she wasn't so sure about but these last few days, Dance Star Mickey is the "it" toy in our household and Mom and Dad don't mind so much because it gets her on her feet and keeps her moving.

Playhouse Disney Canada is also gearing up to get your child on their feet and moving to the beat and they're bringing Mickey Mouse along for all the fun! Did you know that starting on March 5th, 2011 (tomorrow - Yay!) there's a new short series starting on Playhouse Disney Canada and it's called Mickey's Mousekersize! I'm sure by now you're all familiar with Mickey Mouse Clubhouse and the Hot Dog Song that I'll even admit to singing in the shower just because it's so catchy. Fun fact - did you know that Mickey Mouse Clubhouse is the very first television series to star Mickey Mouse in computer generated animation. Pretty neat!

In Mickey's Mousekersize, Mickey leads the Clubhouse gang, including Minne, Donald, Daisy, Goofy and Pluto in all kinds of fun activities around the clubhouse to get them and our kids moving and staying active! Some of the topics covered will be soccer, golf and jumping rope! There's even going to be some original songs that all of our kids will no doubt be singing along with very shortly! This is going to be so much fun and as a busy Mom - thanks to the folks at Playhouse Disney Canada for developing a short series that makes me feel confident that you're really thinking about our kids and that you care about their health and physical fitness enough to make programming like this available! It's awesome, and on behalf of us Moms and Dads, we sincerely thank you!

So Moms, Dads, Grandparents, everyone with kids in their lives, tune into Playhouse Disney Canada on March 5th to catch Mickey's Mousekersize and don't just enjoy watching your kids from the comfort of your couch - get up on your feet and move along with them! Something funny I just found out is that when asked "What makes you smile?" just thinking of that question actually made me smile! I know you're trying it yourself now and I am asking you "What makes you smile?" Bet you're smiling! Weird, I know!!! And I hadn't even thought of anything in particular yet.

But now that everyone is all happy, I am thinking of what makes me happy and now I'm crying - Wow! Clearly this is an emotional day! My daughter makes me smile. Your children make you smile too! Her toes make me smile, her giggle makes me grin and her hugs make me ecstatic. My family makes me happy. Happiness makes us all smile. Our health, our home, our dogs, our little life in a little town with our little girl - that makes me smile! As most of my readers know, I have a 21 month old daughter and she did the cutest thing today at her gymnastics class so now that I'm writing this post, I get to share. It wasn't some spectacular tumble or anything but her and another classmate decided they liked each other best. As Moms, we all make playdates and kind of force the you're going to play with these kids and like them cause I say they're your friends but today she picked her own friend. They walked around together, they gave each other kisses. The other girl is slightly older and more fearless than my daughter but when she tried something my angel tried it too! They even climbed onto the balance beam and walked across together! That made me smile! Hopefully you've smiled today too!

Quaker Journey to Wellness Blog Tour!

What does wellness mean to you? These days that seems like a loaded question of sorts as people have so many varying opinions on health and wellness. They range from the free-spirited people who approach life without hesitation and basically play it day by day to those devout people who obsess over organic products, calories, fat counts and gym memberships.

As part of the Quaker Journey to Wellness, I was asked to write a post and comment on my family's lifestyle and the changes I would like to see all of us make in a quest to become healthier. Well, I'm a self-confessed health junkie, I do workout, I do practice yoga as though it were a religion and I do like raw foods and trail mix. I even like broccoli! I'm healthy and active, both indoors and out and I like to think that I'm doing a pretty good job transferring that message and lifestyle to my daughter who is almost 21 months old. Hubby on the other hand, well that's a different story. He doesn't like food that is green. He only recently started incorporating foods he considers out of the ordinary into his diet. And really, they're not so out of the ordinary at all, they're just items his meat and potatoes family never ate while he was growing up.

So what's a girl to do? Every day, I try to get him to try something new and to make a commitment to our family so that we will be around to see our daughter grow. I've recently gotten him hooked on the Quaker Weight Control oatmeal that not only tastes fantastic, but also helps you stay fuller longer, excellent for those looking to shed a few extra pounds! So really I suppose what my ideal for my family is would be that we experiment with food, good healthy food, that we spend as much active quality time together as possible and that we get outside and do stuff to take part in nature and just enjoy life and each other!

Hot Chocolate and Shutterfly!

I was very pleased when I was recently contacted by Shutterfly and was asked to do a promotional piece of their 2010 Holiday Cards ! Woo-Hoo’s abounded throughout my home! I love Shutterfly and have used it in the past with great success. No having to go to the store, no having to worry about poor supermarket or discount store quality and you can personalize so many items that you, quite honestly, could spend days looking through the Shutterfly website.

I love sending and receiving photo cards – those are the ones I always keep and can you even believe there are over designs available at Shutterfly?! Incredible! I have so many wishes and aspirations for my daughter's future. I admittedly have my own set of Mommy dreams I would love to see her fulfill but only if that is what she chooses. I never want her to do something just because it's what I would want. With that being said, if she did want to make my hopes and dreams come true then she would love dance and gymnastics, she would follow in Mommy's footsteps and love cheerleading. And even though we live in Canada, she would decide that she wants to be a cheerleader in the NFL and, fingers crossed, would cheer for the Buffalo Bills (Mommy's favourite team!) I did have her dress a Bills cheerleader for Halloween this year and she adored the pom poms I made for her so it seems like we may be headed in the right direction.

Education is first and foremost and is critical to getting a good job, making it a career and becoming a valuable member of your community. It is absolutely necessary and there is undoubtedly no getting out of that whatsoever. University will happen - end of discussion!

Most importantly, I want her to blaze her way along and create her own path and not follow behind others. I want her to be happy, healthy and successful in whatever she chooses. I never want her to settle and I need her to know that it's never too late to make your dreams come true and nothing is ever too hard. Every child born into this great big world of ours is capable of greatness and has the same opportunity to change the world and leave their mark forever. Money doesn't mean everything. At the end of the day I truly believe that if you are doing work that makes you happy, if you are living the lifestyle you have always dreamt of and your family is healthy and ridiculously happy that is what matters.

Earlier in this post I mentioned the importance of education and that is honestly what I believe. It is crazy expensive to put your children through school, even with grants and bursaries. I also am of the opinion that the expense of post-secondary education is a parent’s responsibility. Maybe that's a little "old school" but that's how I was raised and it is precisely what I signed up for when I decided to have a child. Wouldn't it be great to get a head start on saving for your child's education? Make it a habit. Children should get into a healthy routine of brushing after breakfast and before bed.
They should brush for at least two minutes so that the fluoride has time to work.
Limit the amount of toothpaste. Children under 6 years of age don’t need more than a pea-sized amount of fluoride toothpaste to clean effectively. This will also help that tube last a little longer!
Be supportive. Up until first grade or later, kids will need supervision and coaching to brush properly.
Make brushing more fun by playing or singing a favourite song, setting a timer to count down two minutes, or offering to read a favourite story as a reward.

Cheerios Playbook Giveaway!

Having the opportunity to be a part of writing this post on behalf of Cheerios Milestones, really got me thinking. I remember a time when I used to be jealous of the other parents who would be vacuuming their cars out on Sundays like it were a new found religion. Whenever I asked them what happened this time, the response was always the same..."Cheerios!" I was jealous because I remembered all the times when I was a child and would sit with my parents at the table for breakfast and we would all eat our Cheerios while we talked about what we were going to do that day. Now, many years later, and having gotten through surviving my years of infertility, I am happy to be blessed with a backseat mess full of Cheerios from my little girl! It's funny how what seems to be a burden to one can actually be the most simple and glorious thing to someone else.

What's more is that this all has to do with cereal, but in my opinion, Cheerios isn't just any typical cereal. Cheerios has a long-standing history of being healthy and nutritious and is commonly chosen as the first "snack food" for toddlers because of it's shape, size and texture! Lately, we've been going through the MultiGrain Cheerios like crazy! They are super good and it's hard to believe that they're actually good for you because they taste far better than the sugary sweet, marshmallow flavoured cereals that try to pass themselves off as being something you should actually be feeding your family.

The other great thing that Cheerios is doing right now is hosting a Cheerios Milestones Contest! Anyone who enters, could see their child featured on a special edition Cheerios box and possibly even win $10,000 towards an RESP from TD Canada Trust! And all you have to do to enter is capture your child's Cheerios Milestone on camera and submit your photo online. As a Mom and "future tuition payer," this would put a nice little dent in our children's educational future!!!

As for my child's Cheerios milestone, while lately she has taken up the habit of marching all around the house. So the other day she took her bowl of Cheerios that was an afternoon snack, marched around the kitchen and living room, right over to one of our dog's, told him to "sit" and proceeded to feed him her Cheerios! So I guess that Cheerios are great for our pets too because Jake just loved them!

Playhouse Disney Canada Blog Tour - Giveaway! CLOSED

Meeska Mooska Mickey Mouse!

I need to start this post by saying that if my 17 month old daughter could speak, her first sentence would seriously be "I love Playhouse Disney Canada!!!" And, admittedly, so do Mom and Dad!

I really am hoping that all of you have Playhouse Disney Canada in your channel line-up but I know that there are some providers that still don't offer it to their subscribers. All I have to say is if you don't have it, keep calling your service provider and request it because your entire family is going to love it! We are with Rogers Digital TV and while there are many channels geared towards children of all age groups, the one that seems to be the tried and true one is Playhouse Disney Canada.

Now everyone is familiar with Mickey Mouse and Mickey Mouse Clubhouse is such a fun half hour full of songs, dancing, all of your favourite Disney characters and so many bright, vivid colours that you just can't help but watch and join in on all of the fun. There's also so much learninbg to be done, shapes, numbers, counting, animal recognition and more. This show is not just a cartoon, it really does engage your child. I know that my daughter adores Goofy and runs to the television to point and laugh at him everytime he's on. This show is always on my PVR record list as I know, no matter what, it will always put a smile on my baby's face!

One of the newest shows is Special Agent Oso and talk about cute! This little guy is simply adorable and again, because it's Disney, the colours are incredible and Oso, along with his friends, helps teach your toddlers things such as how to make pancakes or even how to set a table! Who ever thought that a cartoon could help your kids learn this - it's awesome!!!

There are so many great things about Playhouse Disney Canada that we love in our household. It is entirely ad free and commercial free so a 30 minute cartoon is just that, no commercials and no pauses that sometimes seem to make even the best day take a dramatic turn downwards. The programming is completely family-friendly - all cartoons, all the time and always for children. In addition to the above mentioned shows, Tigger and Pooh and Handy Manny, amongst others are there to entertain your children no matter what time of day. And the greatest thing really is that, as a parent, I love to see my daughter smile and when I see her, at her age recognize her favourite characters and actually try to sing-along to their songs, it melts my heart.

So thank you Playhouse Disney Canada for making my job as a Mom a bit easier and for making my baby smile each and every day!
